A friend of mine, Bubbles, so named for her personality as well as her rather generous bewbs, used to work in a nursing home at one time.

She is a veritable gold mine of stories, and good nature. Kindness, and the ability to find the ridiculous in everyday things. She is quicker with a comeback than anyone I’ve met.

Bubbles told me a true story while I sat on a swing in her backyard. I laughed so hard I had to change my underwear. You gotta love friends who make you pee your pants laughing.

As she told it, one of the residents, Archie, was taking a turn for the worse. Fearing he was fixing to take the long dirt nap, the staff had summoned his children to be by his bedside.

In his confused state, Archie squinted at the circle of 70-somethings that were the fruit of his loins, and croaked asked aloud: “Who are these people?”

Bubbles: “They’re your children, Archie. They’ve come to visit you.”

Archie:(feebly shaking his head) “I must be some god-damned old.”

You can’t make this stuff up.

I have more stories that Bubbles told me, but these are for another day.

“… the long dirt nap …” Read by a man, on his Birthday, as he was already sitting there contemplating his mortality, realizing that all the good stuff is probably back THERE somewhere, and not UP AHEAD somewhere – the ‘good stuff’ consisting of of sex, booze and … well, forget the booze and money don’t matter, so, yeah, SEX and beautiful women.

But it WAS funny.

It’s kinda the same as the pearls of wisdom children give us. The truest truisms, there are come from the elderly and the wee. And they are the ones who aren’t afraid to say it!

I worked at an Old People’s Home in Bournemouth, and I had forgotten how many stories I have from those days! Ray, who used to cheat at cards and “Win” all of Bill’s money every week… “Auntie” Liz, who called me Joan and knitted a long, long thing that unravelled forever at the other end. Three of my favorite characters of all time. There were others of course, but thanks for reminding me about Bill and Ray and Liz!
