To be honest, I don't really understand people who do. I've actually died once (not to the point of the white light...I just totally stopped breathing, heart stopped, paralysis, and an electrical spark moved from my toes up), but it was actually quite nice. My family isn't ashamed of being native American, but when I remind them that we're VERY likely part-African-American, some of them aren't so keen on it (usually the older ones).
