I've made the default setup similar to what you are using here and have made the code required for the template far less complicated. This will (hopefully) make the plugin more appealing to noob WordPress users. It should be in the Official WordPress plugins directory soon'ish too, which will give alerts when new versions are uploaded. Although the old version should function fine for the forseeable future. Upgrades will probably just include functional improvements.
