I’ve been playing with my theme and kind of broke it a bit.

So if it looks wonky, come back in a sec, and it will be different.

I’m wishing I had some php skills right now.

I have a great WordPress plugin to share with you as soon as I get my header.php back where it ought to be.

Reading time is minimal. Why not vote?

UPDATE:

What we have now is a drop-down dynamically-populated navigation bar, courtesy of a WordPress Plugin which you can read about here
This page only shows the simple code for your pages, but I wanted to have my archives and categories out of the sidebar, so I picked up my code on this page. Last item on the page is the one I used.

I have to clean up the appearance of it. The font is too large for my liking and I may mess with background colours.

It was very simple to implement. The problem that I had was when I messed with my header code, and uploaded the unmodified file. Der. Have backups on your hard drive. You can always get your original theme file if you want to go back to scratch.

I’ve been wanting to clean up my sidebars for quite a while now, to prepare for the time that I put up advertising. Since nobody loves my donate button, I figure ads may be the way to go. Mama wants her hosting fees paid. And a decent camera. And a laptop.

Even in my shameless hollering for votes and/or Stumbles, I have not promoted the teeny, tiny donate button. And, I don’t plan to. I put it in so I could have a customer correct her order for purple plates easily.

Now go vote for me in the blogger’s choice awards. *Grinning at Teeni*
And show me your new navigation bars. Please.

UPDATE PLUS:

Ryan Hellyer has streamlined his code, so that you can choose your options right on his page, and now you only have to add one line of code. If you are using his plugin in a live site, he will link to you.
I’m going to change mine, because who doesn’t love one line of code?

Playing with your theme is fun, but it’s annoying when you break it huh? I always FTP my files to my computer before messing with anything so I have a working copy in case I break the one I am playing with- I do that lots!

Have fun with your theme playing! I voted for you and gave your shart so link love today! Take care…

Cool! Nice to see you are using my plugin :)

If you have any requests for changes, or would like help with it in anyway just leave a comment on my blog and I am happy to help. I haven’t spent a lot of time on this plugin and there’s lots of things which ‘could’ be done with it that I haven’t gotten round to yet … http://ryanhellyer.net/2008/01/14/suckerfish-wordpress-plugin/

To edit the font size, all you need to do is open the file ryans_suckerfish.css and edit the font size under #suckerfishnav. If I can figure out how, I might add an option to alter the font size in the admin panel, but I’m not 100% sure how to do that right now so it won’t be available for a while yet.

One more thing. I see you don’t have a home button in your menu. If you want one, just leave me a comment back on my site and I’ll rustle up a new demo (with code) with a home button added.

Oh, I like the dropdowns a lot – they definitely save a lot of space. Your blogroll is interesting now too – it shows three random sites at once and each time I refresh the screen it is three different sites. I’m definitely gonna be asking you for help when I start getting paid hosting.

Ryan Says:

I did a substantial upgrade to the plugin tonight. I’ve made the default setup similar to what you are using here and have made the code required for the template far less complicated. This will (hopefully) make the plugin more appealing to noob WordPress users. It should be in the Official WordPress plugins directory soon’ish too, which will give alerts when new versions are uploaded. Although the old version should function fine for the forseeable future. Upgrades will probably just include functional improvements. The plugin is pretty basic so there’s not really anything that could (AFAIK) go wrong security wise with it.

To new readers: If you don’t see me answering in comments, it’s because I would have answered by email. I have been going back and forth on that issue, because some of my answers are long-winded and deserve to be included to be shared with others. However, if only some comments are answered publicly, it looks like I’m playing favourites, which may scare off the new people from commenting. Just remember, each comment here parses your feed, and displays a link to your last post. CommentLuv rules!
